Shastri’s death: What’s the govt hiding?

The Government of India’s refusal to reveal details pertaining to the sudden and mysterious death of the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at Tashkent in the erstwhile USSR gives rise to suspicion that it has many skeletons in its closet.

The cause of Shastri’s death has been shrouded in mystery for over 43 years, with several conspiracy theories doing the rounds. With the end of the Indo-Pak war in September 1965, Shastri and Pakistan President Ayub Khan signed the Tashkent Declaration on January 10, 1966. Shastri died the next night after he supposedly suffered a heart attack.

One theory is that he was killed by America’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), while some others describe this as a political murder. There have also been several suggestions, all of them unsubstantiated, that Shastri’s successor Indira Gandhi had a role in his death. The Government’s refusal to de-classify the papers relating to the death has only added to the intrigue.

Shastri’s family including his wife Lalita Shastri had alleged that he died due to poisoning as his body had turned blue. It is said that the death came soon after he consumed milk allegedly laced with poison.

There are also conflicting reports on whether a post-mortem was conducted on Shastri’s body in the USSR or in India. Now, in a response to a Right to Information (RTI) plea filed by Anuj Dhar, author of CIA’s Eye on South Asia, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has stated that no postmortem was conducted in either of the two countries.

However, while admitting that it had one document related to Shastri’s death, the PMO refused to declassify it as it could lead to harming of foreign relations, cause disruption in the country and lead to breach of parliamentary privileges. The Government has also stated that it is in possession of a medical investigation conducted by Shastri’s personal physician.

The people of this country have every right to know what caused the death of their second Prime Minister, and the first step in this direction would be for the Government to declassify the relevant documents. This will also help the Government and the Congress party to clear the name of Indira Gandhi who has been unfairly tarnished by critics over the years.

Even in 1966, the Government made no credible efforts to ascertain the exact nature of Shastri’s demise. It is sad that the same apathy continues even to this day.

The question is: What is the Government trying to hide?

8 out of the total 14 Prime Ministers of India have been from UP, 6 out of those 8 have been from Congress...
I think your party had more than half a century and half a Dozen PM's  to build a State...

The Reason Mulayam Singh, subsequently came to Power is because your party wasn't exactly Gandhian in their dealings in the State.. So May be If you look at in totality the present chaos in UP is the outcome of the glorious leadership displayed by Congress in UP for about 50 years!

So Please don't feel ashamed as yet Dear Rahul.. For Mayawati is only using the Land Acquisition Bill which your party had itself used to LOOT the Farmers many times in the Past!

When FBI was asked to divulge the information, by Right/Freedom to Information Activists about the reasons Rahul was arrested ... FBI asked for a NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE from Rahul Gandhi.
So Subramaniyam Swami wrote a Letter to Rahul Gandhi, " If you have NOTHING to HIDE, Give us the Permission"
HE NEVER REPLIED!

Why did that arrest not make Headlines Rahul? You could have gone to the Media and told, "I am ashamed to call myself an INDIAN?".

July 16, 2001: British spy agencies warn that al-Qaeda is in "the final stages" of preparing a terrorist attack in the West. The report states there is "an acute awareness" that the attack is "a very serious threat." In early August, the British add that the attack will involve multiple airplane hijackings. July 26, 2001: CBS News reports that Attorney General Ashcroft has stopped flying commercial airlines due to a threat assessment, but "neither the FBI nor the Justice Department ... would identify [to CBS] what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it." The San Francisco Chronicle later concludes, "The FBI obviously knew something was in the wind ... The FBI did advise Ashcroft to stay off commercial aircraft. August 6th, 2001 President Bush receives a 11.5 page report including a warning about an "attack with planes". A shorter memo goes to Dick Cheney, Andrew Card, Condoleeza Rice, Sen. Richard Shelby, Sen. Bob Graham, GOP Rep. Porter Goss, Rep. Nancy Pelosi. President Bush receives classified intelligence briefings at his Crawford, Texas ranch indicating that bin Laden might be planning to hijack commercial airliners. August 19th, 2001 John O'Neill's briefcase with important documents is stolen during a Miami conference and is recovered later.- In the few months leading up to September 11, O'Neill was suddenly the subject of a series of seemingly unrelated controversies –the first, in July, involving his dispute with the State Department over the conduct of the bin Laden investigation in Yemen; and the second, in August, in which he was reported to be under an FBI probe for misplacing a briefcase of classified documents during an FBI convention in Tampa. In the light of the aftermath of this second controversy -- the documents were found, "untouched", a few hours later. August/September 2001 - According to a detailed 13-page memo written by Minneapolis FBI legal officer Colleen Rowley, FBI headquarters ignores urgent, direct warnings from French intelligence services about pending attacks. In addition, a single Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) in Washington expends extra effort to thwart the field office's investigation of Zacarias Moussaoui, in one case rewriting Rowley's affidavit for a search warrant to search Moussaoui's laptop. Rowley's memo uses terms like "deliberately sabotage," "block," "integrity," "omitted," "downplayed," "glossed over," "mis-characterize," "improper political reasons, "deliberately thwarting," "deliberately further undercut," "suppressed," and "not completely honest." These are not terms describing negligent acts but rather, deliberate acts. FBI field agents desperately attempt to get action, but to no avail. One agent speculates that bin Laden might be planning to crash airliners into the WTC, while Rowley ironically noted that the SSA who had committed these deliberate actions had actually been promoted after Sept. 11. August 22, 2001: Counter-terrorism expert John O'Neill, "committed tracker of Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network of terrorists," quits the FBI because of the recent power play against him led by Tom Pickard, interim director of the FBI, and because of repeated obstruction of his investigations into al-Qaeda. O’Neill never hears the CIA warning about hijackers Alhazmi and Almihdhar sent out just one day later nor Ken Williams' flight school memo, nor of Walid Arkeh's warning, nor about the arrest of Zacarias Moussaoui, nor is he at a June meeting when the CIA revealed some of what it knew about Alhazmi and Almihdhar. August 2001 - Russian President Vladimir Putin orders Russian intelligence to warn the U.S. government "in the strongest possible terms" of imminent attacks on airports and government buildings.  Russian President Putin later states that during this month, "I ordered my intelligence to warn President Bush in the strongest terms that 25 terrorists were getting ready to attack the US, including important government buildings like the Pentagon." He states that suicide pilots are training for attacks on US targets. The head of Russian intelligence also states, "We had clearly warned them" on several occasions, but they "did not pay the necessary attention." September 9, 2001: A "game plan to remove al-Qaeda from the face of the Earth" is placed on Bush's desk for his signature. The plan deals with all aspects of a war against al-Qaeda, ranging from diplomatic initiatives to a military invasion in Afghanistan. According to NBC News reporter Jim Miklaszewski, the "directive outlines essentially the same war plan ... put into action after the Sept. 11 attacks. The administration most likely was able to respond so quickly to the attacks because it simply had to pull the plans 'off the shelf.'" Bush was expected to sign it but still hadn't done so by 9/11. Sandy Berger, Clinton's National Security Advisor, has stated, "You show me one reporter, one commentator, one member of Congress who thought we should invade Afghanistan before September 11 and I'll buy you dinner in the best restaurant in New York City." In July 2002, British Prime Minister Tony Blair will state: "To be truthful about it, there was no way we could have got the public consent to have suddenly launched a campaign on Afghanistan but for what happened on September 11." September 11, 2001:  Four planes are hijacked, two crash into the WTC, one into the Pentagon, and one crashes into the Pennsylvania countryside. At least 3,000 people.  Five people are arrested--neighbors alerted police after seeing them film the burning WTC from the roof of a building,   One man was found with $4,700 in cash hidden in his sock, another had two passports on him, and a box cutter was found in the van they were driving when arrested. Investigators say that "There are maps of the city in the car with certain places highlighted... It looked like they're hooked in with this. It looked like they knew what was going to happen." One of them says, "Our purpose was to document the event." ABC News later reports that the FBI determined at least two are Mossad agents, and that all were on a Mossad surveillance mission. [ABC]
November 20, 2001: The five Israelis on a Mossad surveillance mission arrested after filming the burning of the WTC while shouting in cries of joy and mockery are released on November 20, 2001 as part of a deal with the Israeli government. The owner of the moving van company they all worked had fled to Israel on September 13 and is still wanted by US authorities. The FBI later claims that none of them had any advanced knowledge of the 9/11 attacks.

"Agent Coleen Rowley wrote that the Minnesota agents became so frustrated by roadblocks erected by terrorism supervisors in Washington that they began to joke that FBI headquarters was becoming an ‘unwitting accomplice’ to Osama bin Laden's efforts to attack the United States, the officials said."
May 30, 2002: FBI agent Wright spoke out again at a press conference in Washington, D.C. in May. He accused the FBI of intentionally thwarting investigations of known terrorists. On the fourth floor of the U.S. Capitol, security is so tight that representatives and senators from the joint-intelligence committee who are investigating the Sept. 11 attacks must check their cell phones and pagers at the door.

Behind those sound-proof walls, shocking evidence about foreknowledge of the terrorist attacks is being kept secret.

One reason for such furtive activity may have to do with why both the White House and CNN altered the transcript of a May 16, 2002 White House press conference by National Security Advisor Dr. Condoleezza Rice.

The machinations had their genesis later in the day that Thursday, after The New York Post hit the streets with its huge “Bush Knew” banner, adding “Prez Was Warned of Possible Hijacking Before Terror Attacks” as a subheading. Other papers began to reveal the contents of a presidential FBI briefing from Aug. 6—36 days before the Sept. 11 attacks.

The top-secret briefing said that Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda were going to “bring the fight to America,” reported The Toronto Star, for past U.S. attacks upon its training camps in Afghanistan.

So the wheels of presidential damage control started turning, even as The New York Times was putting finishing touches on an explosive May 19 story for the next day, reporting that Bush had also been briefed before Sept. 11.

The Times reported: “A 1999 report for the National Intelligence Council, which oversees government intelligence analysis, saying ‘Suicide bomber(s) belonging to al Qaeda’s martyrdom Battalion could crash-land an aircraft packed with high explosives into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the [CIA] or the White House.’ ”

Senate Majority Leader Thomas Daschle (D-S.D.) said he was “gravely concerned about the information provided us just yesterday that the president received a warning in August about the threat of hijackers,” adding “Why did it take eight months for us to receive this information.”

Then House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt (D-Mo) called for a congressional investigation into “what the president and what the White House knew about the events leading up to 9-11.”

But like the gang that couldn’t shoot straight, Gephardt has also been convinced not to make waves—grieving families of victims who are depending on him to fight for truth notwithstanding.

American Free Press has learned that the secretary of state and two other State Department officials, the CIA director, three senators, and a congressman actually met with the intelligence chief from Pakistan who, it has been alleged, wired $100,000 to fund the operations of suspected terrorist hijacker leader Mohammed Atta just prior to the attacks.

In fact, Pakistan’s intelligence service—the ISI—has had a long-standing and intimate relationship with the CIA, going back a generation. That the high-ranking ISI official linked to the events of 9-11 was huddling with American officials just prior to the 9-11 attacks is a devastating detail indeed—and not something that the U.S. government wants to be cranked into the discussion of possible U.S. foreknowledge of events surrounding the terrorist tragedy.

In a June 20, 2002 report, titled Political Deception: The Missing Link Behind 9-11 by the Center for Re search on Globalization, Michel Chossudovsky, University of Ottawa professor of economics, brings these and other critical revelations to the fore.

A couple of words were deleted from the CNN transcript of Rice’s May 16 remarks, when compared to the transcript from the Federal News Service which included the words “ISI chief.”

“After checking the transcript for Dr. Rice, you are correct that the words ‘ISI chief’ are missing from the transcript,” said a CNN spokesman in Atlanta. CNN provided a copy of the transcript.

However, in the White House version, the word “inaudible” was found in parentheses. The White House transcript reads:

Q: Dr. Rice? Dr Rice?

RICE: Yes?

Q: Are you aware of the reports at the time that ———— was in Washington on Sept. 11; and on Sept. 10, $100,000 was wired from Pakistan to these groups in this area? And why was he here? Was he meeting with you or anybody in the administration?

Ms. RICE: I have not seen that report, and he was certainly not meeting with me.

The Washington Post reported May 16, 2002, that “officials familiar with the White House’s strategy [during damage control] said senior aides were anxious to dispel the notion of a cover up and said they wanted to avoid appearing defensive, either in front of cameras or behind the scenes.”

FINANCIAL BENEFACTOR

According to the Times of India, Mohammed Atta’s financial bagman, Lt. General Mahmoud Ahmad, had been fired as head of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Security Agency (ISI) as “U.S. authorities [FBI] sought his removal after confirming that $100,000 had been wired to WTC hijacker Mohammed Atta from Pakistan through Ahmad Sheikh at the instance [sic] of General Mahmoud.

The paper reported that “Senior [U.S.] government sources have confirmed that India contributed significantly to establishing the link between the money transfer and the role played by the dismissed ISI chief.”

But ABC’s Brian Ross had reported on Sept. 30, 2001: “As to Sept. 11, federal authorities have told ABC News they’ve now tracked more than $100,000 from banks in Pakistan to two banks in Florida to accounts held by suspected hijack ringleader Mohammed Atta. As well this morning Time magazine is reporting that some of that money came in the days just before the attack and can be traced directly to people connected to Osama bin Laden.”

If the dots are not connected, the public will never understand why extreme secrecy, closed, sound-proof hearings, and one year’s delayed investigations are so crucial to the ongoing—and as yet unchallenged—cover-up within the Joint-Intelligence Committee.

But that is exactly why both Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have resisted congressional hearings—finally agreeing to lessen the number of members with access to the truth.

Three days after the attacks, The New York Times reported that important members of the Bush administration met with Ahmad: CIA Director George Tenet, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, Under-Secretary of State Marc Grossman, and Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The report confirms that other members of the Senate and House Intelligence committees were present.

The Times also revealed that the co-chairmen of the Joint-Intelligence Committee, Bob Graham (D-Fla.), and Rep. Porter Goss (R-Fla.), met for breakfast with the ISI chief on Sept. 11 while the attacks were actually in progress.

The Times of India reported that “The CIA worked in tandem with Pakistan to create the ‘monster’ that is today Afghanistan’s Taliban.”

ENRON ties in because Enrons Flagship Project in Dabhol India was a huge gas fired power plant that couldn't run without natural gas from these pipeline projects. Enron was also involved in getting the energy out of Central Asian countries.
Interesting note: a Chevron oil tanker was named "The Condoleeza Rice" until she was put in charge of the National Security Agency in 2001.

On the same day, a consortium to build a pipeline through Afghanistan is formed. It's called CentGas, and the two main partners are Unocal and Delta Oil of Saudi Arabia. December 14, 1997: Unocal has hired the University of Nebraska to train 400 Afghani teachers, electricians, carpenters and pipefitters in anticipation of using them for their pipeline in Afghanistan. 150 students are already attending classes.  Unocal, with the support of Washington, continued to actively woo the Taliban leaders who, in an effort to obtain the most lucrative deal, were playing the American company off against Bridas. Unocal provided nearly $1 million to set up the Centre for Afghanistan Studies at the University of Omaha as a front for an aid program in Taliban-held Kandahar. February 12, 1998: Unocal Vice President John J. Maresca - (later to become a Special Ambassador to Afghanistan) - testifies before the House of representatives that until a single, unified, friendly government is in place in Afghanistan the trans-Afghani pipeline will not be built. He suggests that with a pipeline through Afghanistan, the Caspian basin could produce 20 percent of all the non-OPEC oil in the world by 2010. Early 1998: Bill Richardson, the US Ambassador to the UN, meets Taliban officials in Kabul (all such meetings are technically illegal, because the US still officially recognizes the government the Taliban ousted as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan). US officials at the time call the pipeline project a "fabulous opportunity" and are especially motivated by the "prospect of circumventing Iran, which offered another route for the pipeline." June 1998 (B): Enron's agreement to develop natural gas with the government of Uzbekistan is not renewed. Enron closes its office there. The reason for the "failure of Enron's flagship project" (a massive electric power plant in Dabhol India) , is the inability to get natural gas out of the region. The hope was to use a pipeline through Afghanistan, but "Uzbekistan is extremely concerned at the growing strength of the Taliban and its potential impact on stability in Uzbekistan, making any future cooperation on a pipeline project which benefits the Taliban unlikely." A $12 billion pipeline through China is being considered as one solution, but that wouldn't be completed until the end of the next decade at the earliest. August 7, 1998: Terrorists bomb the US embassies in Africa (Kenya and Tanzania). The bomb in Nairobi, Kenya kills 213 people, including 12 US nationals, and injures more than 4,500. The bomb in Dar es Salaam kills 11 and injures 85. The attack is blamed on al-Qaeda. [PBS Frontline, 2001]
August 9, 1998: The Taliban, have control over 90% of Afghanistan, including the entire pipeline route. CentGas, the consortium behind the gas pipeline that would run through Afghanistan, is now "ready to proceed. " However, the pipeline cannot be financed unless the government is officially recognized. "Diplomatic sources said the Taliban's offensive was well prepared and deliberately scheduled two months ahead of the next UN meeting" to decide if the Taliban should be recognized. August 22, 1998: Unocal announced that CentGas had not secured the financing necessary to begin the work, and on August 22, 1998, Unocal suspended construction plans due to the continuing civil war in Afghanistan. While the governments of Turkmenistan and Pakistan, as well as the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan, have continued discussions on the route, there does not seem to be any near-term likelihood that it will be built. February 9, 2001:  Bush has been in office a matter of days, when secret pipeline negotiations with the Taliban have begun. The new administration has already twice threatened the Taliban that the US would hold the Taliban responsible for any al-Qaeda attack. April 2001 (D): A report commission by former US Secretary of State James Baker entitled "Strategic Energy Policy Challenges For The 21st Century" is submitted to Vice President Cheney this month. The report says the "central dilemma" for the US administration is that "the American people continue to demand plentiful and cheap energy without sacrifice or inconvenience." "the United States remains a prisoner of its energy dilemma," "need for military intervention" to secure its oil supply. It argues that Iraq needs to be overthrown so the US can control its oil. The Taliban visits to Washington continued up to a few months prior to the September 11 attacks. The State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research's South Asian Division maintained constant satellite telephone contact with the Taliban in Kandahar and Kabul. Washington permitted the Taliban to maintain a diplomatic office in Queens, New York headed by Taliban diplomat Abdul Hakim Mojahed. August 2, 2001: Christina Rocca, the Director of Asian Affairs at the State Department, secretly meets the Taliban ambassador in Islamabad, apparently in a last ditch attempt to secure a pipeline deal. Rocca was previously in charge of contacts with Islamic guerrilla groups at the CIA, and oversaw the delivery of Stinger missiles to Afghan mujaheddin in the 1980's. September 9, 2001: A plan to remove al-Qaeda from the face of the Earth" is placed on Bush's desk for his signature. The plan deals with all aspects of a war against al-Qaeda, ranging from diplomatic initiatives to a military invasion in Afghanistan. According to NBC News reporter Jim Miklaszewski, the "directive outlines essentially the same war plan ... put into action after the Sept. 11 attacks. (Hamid) Karzai (was) the leader of the southern Afghan Pashtun Durrani tribe, (and) was a member of the mujaheddin that fought the Soviets during the 1980s. He was a top contact for the CIA and maintained close relations with CIA Director William Casey, Vice President George Bush, and their Pakistani Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) Service interlocutors. Later, Karzai and a number of his brothers moved to the United States under the auspices of the CIA. Karzai continued to serve the agency's interests, as well as those of the Bush Family and their oil friends in negotiating the CentGas deal, according to Middle East and South Asian sources. January 23, 2002: recent meetings between U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Wendy Chamberlain and that country's oil minister Usman Aminuddin indicate the pipeline project is international Project Number One for the Bush administration. Chamberlain,  who maintains close ties to the Saudi ambassador to Pakistan (a one-time chief money conduit for the Taliban), has been pushing Pakistan to begin work on its Arabian Sea oil terminus for the pipeline… U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan….guarding pipeline construction … Karzai's ties with UNOCAL and the Bush administration are..why the CIA pushed him for Afghan leader over rival Abdul Haq, the assassinated former mujaheddin leader from Jalalabad, and the leadership of the Northern Alliance, seen by Langley as being too close to the Russians and Iranians. Haq had no apparent close ties to the U.S. oil industry and, as both a Pushtun and a northern Afghani, was popular with a wide cross-section of the Afghan people, including the Northern Alliance. Why did Bush appoint another Oil Company Consultant (Zalamy Khalilzad) as special envoy to Afghanistan?

January 1, 2002: President Bush appoints Zalamy Khalilzad as a special envoy to Afghanistan. [BBC, 1/1/02] Khalilzad, a former employee of Unocal, also wrote op-eds in the Washington Post in 1997 supporting the Taliban regime, back when Unocal was hoping to work with the Taliban. FTW

(Zalamy) Khalilzad, a fellow Pashtun and the son of a former government official under King Mohammed Zahir Shah, was, in addition to being a consultant to the RAND Corporation, a special liaison between UNOCAL and the Taliban government. Khalilzad also worked on various risk analyses for the project. Khalilzad's efforts complemented those of the Enron Corporation, a major political contributor to the Bush campaign. Enron, which recently filed for bankruptcy in the single biggest corporate collapse in the nation's history, conducted the feasibility study for the CentGas deal. Vice President Cheney held several secret meetings with top Enron officials, including its Chairman Kenneth Lay, earlier in 2001. A consortium led by Unocal had originally aimed to build the $1.9 billion, 1,400-km (875-mile) pipeline to run from gas-rich Turkmenistan via northern Afghanistan. December 27, 2002: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan sign an agreement for the building of the Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline, a US$3.2 billion project that has been delayed for many years. [BBC, 12/27/02, CNN, 12/26/02] A study by the Asian Development Bank stated that the pipeline would move natural gas from Turkmenistan's huge Dauletabad-Donmez fields to the Pakistani port city of Gwadar. The pipeline was originally launched in 1997, but was abandoned when a consortium led by UNOCAL withdrew over fears of being seen as supporting the Taliban and because the US launched missile attacks on Afghanistan in 1999. The Afghan, Pakistani and Turkmen leaders relaunched the project in May 2002. UNOCAL has denied it is interested in returning to Afghanistan. December 4, 1997: Representatives of the Taliban are invited guests to the Texas headquarters of Unocal to negotiate their support for the pipeline. (George W. Bush is Governor of Texas at the time.) The Taliban appear to agree to a $2 billion pipeline deal, but will do the deal only if the US officially recognizes the Taliban regime. The Taliban meet with US officials, and the Telegraph reports that "the US government, which in the past has branded the Taliban's policies against women and children 'despicable,' appears anxious to please the fundamentalists to clinch the lucrative pipeline contract." A BBC regional correspondent says "the proposal to build a pipeline across Afghanistan is part of an international scramble to profit from developing the rich energy resources of the Caspian Sea."
